THE Singapore Indoor Stadium is set to rumble on Sept 3 with mixed martial-arts (MMA) action, as fighters battle it out in an inaugural event organised by ONE Fighting Championship.
Hailing itself as Asia's largest MMA organisation, ONE Fighting Championship aims to host a series of world-class events in all major Asian cities - starting with Singapore, in less than two months' time.
The event, titled "Champion vs Champion: Asia's Greatest Battle of Champions", features 16 MMA exponents who were either national or world champions.
While the sport has become popular television entertainment in the United States, it is still trying to make inroads into other parts of the world, including Asia.
However, Victor Cui, chief executive and owner of ONE Fighting Championship, believes that the region, with its own unique martial-arts background, provides huge potential for the sport to thrive.
He said: "Asia has been...home to martial arts for the last 5,000 years, and ONE Fighting Championship is keen to bring MMA to the 3.9 billion people living in Asia.
"I've been cultivating my contacts and collaborators over the past five years, and I'm confident that we have enough financial strength to bring the best fighters to Asia, and make sure they give their best shot.
"We intend to showcase some of the most adrenalin-filled, exciting fights in Asia, featuring the best Asian fighters."
The upcoming event will feature Singapore's first professional MMA fighter, Radeem Abdul Rahman. The 24-year-old is an assistant instructor at Evolve Mixed Martial Arts, and was a professional Muay Thai boxer before moving on to the MMA discipline last year.
He is eager to prove himself, saying: "I've been training hard for the event, I've been dreaming about being victorious in my bout.
"Now is the time to train hard, be ready to give my best shot at the event, and make my parents and friends proud."
Tickets for the ONE Fighting Championship event are available at Sistic outlets.
